How a fish became a girl...

Taking risks is scary. Every day, we analyze costs, risks, time, potential success, and a host of other variables, to balance the analytical and the creative. But, every once and a while, you see things that seem so insane, you’re not sure how they got past the number crunchers and risk analysts.

For me, that’s the movie Ponyo.

Now, don’t get me wrong, making a film that is brainchild of Hayao Miyazaki is pretty much as low risk as it gets. The man is known for insanely creative ideas in worlds that usually aren’t explored for the sake of the bottom line. (See: Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky, Howl’s Moving Castle, etc.)

However, Ponyo is the story of a magical little goldfish who wants to explore and soon she finds herself falling in love with the little boy who found her washed up on the beach. It’s already weird and I haven’t even told you about the frog face and chicken feet. Now, you may be saying, “that sounds like The Little Mermaid,” but I assure you, you could not be more wrong.

Here, just watch the trailer…

What I love about Miyazaki’s films is that, no matter the idea, he goes with it. He gets out there and makes the new world and tells the crazy story and that’s how I think marketing should be, too.

We need to keep some of those analytical items in mind, but if we aren’t out there trying the new things and exploring our crazy sides, we’ll never create the fun experiences that we should be. We’ll return back to the ways of message blasting and pushing money out all over the place.

As we move forward, we’re excited to really get out there and create the seemingly insane campaigns. So keep your eyes open, as you may run into a pantless Gorilla or two as we start launching our first product.
