What Makes You CL!CK?

The Internet’s head nearly exploded yesterday with all the hubbub about Facebook’s privacy shenanigans. If you were one of the many people tracking that story, or playing with your new Google Nexus phone, then you probably missed out on some pretty exciting news. Here’s a hint: It’s awesome. What could be more awesome than a brand spankin’ new Nexus? Well, a shark with laser beams on its head for one. I sent a letter to the Discovery Channel and everything! Could you imagine…? Shark Week: With Lasers! Ahem, anyway. This week’s news involves LEGOs. Yes, those wonderful magical toys that can keep any kid (or adult) entertained for hours upon hours.

Yesterday, LEGO launched its Lego Click Community. Lego Click is a “collaborative environment designed for inventors, artists and creative enthusiasts to share their vision for new products and toys.” (source)

In addition to the new community, LEGO has also released a free iPhone app, LEGO Photo that will turn your photos into Lego creations. After playing with it for a while, my co-worker can attest to the fact that even a twenty-five-year-old can still have fun with Legos.

You’re Doing It Wrong Right.

It’s nice to see a company that’s been around for so long dive into the social media pool and stay afloat. Instead of just hopping on the Twitter bandwagon, they’re utilizing other mediums and understand the importance of community.

Creating a collaborative space for both young and the young-at-heart is a really fun idea.

Brainstorming Is Fun Again.

I don’t know about you, but I have a hidden talent, a secret power if you will. I have the ability to discourage and talk myself out of many ideas. If an idea doesn’t work the first time, it’s quickly balled up and thrown into the imaginary trash can (with a basketball net over it) in my head. Don’t worry, I make the basket every time.

You might be saying, “But Jenn, can’t you brainstorm anywhere with anyone? How is it any different now?” Well Reader, I’m glad you asked. For a brief moment it is possible to forget that you’re an adult doing your job. Think back to when you were a kid and anything was possible. Building a castle with a moat and sharks with laser beams wasn’t impossible. It’s so easy to forget that. Instead of staring at a blinking cursor on an empty Excel sheet, I’m now looking at giant Lego blocks and amazing and innovative ideas from other creative minds. It’s an escape that ultimately puts me in the right state of mind to start scheming, creating and imagining.

But don’t take my word for it. Try it for yourself.

If you’re on Twitter, tag your ideas with #legoclick or tag your Flickr photos with legoclick. Selected posts will appear on the website and users can offer feedback.

This reminds me of an art class I took as an undergrad that really stuck with me. The professor said that, “Everyone is an artist. As a child you drew anything you wished; at least, that was the case, until someone said you ‘sucked’. Then, you put down your crayons, and ceased to be an artist.”

We need to remember those kid artists inside of all of us and have faith in their ideas, because they’re the ones who believe in everything from Santa to sharks with lasers to (in my case) the jackalope. (Seriously, searched all over Yellowstone for that thing.)

To me, the ideas we fear, seem to be the best ones to try and we should all dump out our mental trash cans and take a second look.
