Codeword: Roadkill Jerky

We’re back in the office after our whirlwind trip to SXSW. Our time in Texas was outstanding and the enthusiastic reception of Glass exceeded all of our expectations. There’s just too much to recap in one post, but I wanted to start by breaking down something that we’ve been asked about: roadkill jerky.

On the convention floor, we had old school gumball machines setup, and anyone who wanted to use a Glass token to win a color-coded capsule could win swag ranging from hats to rubber ducks. The three luckiest winners could win a brand-spanking new netbook. Much to our chagrin, after almost two days at the booth no one had won the big prize. So, we decided that we’d give one away to our Twitter followers (@writeonglass). The tweet would go out with a password, and the first person to tell that password to “the man in the white hat” (Oscar, one of our founders) would win a netbook. The only question that remained was ‘what should the netbook password be?’ Jump cut to: the previous night…

After a cross-town trek in search of a restaurant that didn’t have a 2-hour wait for a table, a few of us grabbed dinner just south of the city and then hitched a ride with our friend Sara from the JB & Sandy Morning Show on 94.7FM. Being a resident Austinian, Sara brought us to a very local spot called The Horseshoe Lounge. A down-home dive bar, which was just what we needed after a long day, The Horseshoe featured some of the finest shuffleboard mine eyes have ever seen. As soon as we sat down, we were fascinated by a piece of paper on the wall that read: “Happy Jack has Roadkill Jerky. $5.00 a bag.” We had to know more.

After building up some liquid courage, and learning that the elderly patriarch who was schooling all comers on the shuffleboard table was Happy Jack, Lindsey (Marketing Director) and Sara asked him, “What is roadkill jerky?” To my recollection, he didn’t answer with words, but simply retrieved a plastic bag from his green jacket and began distributing chunks of dehydrated meat. We all looked at each other, not knowing that we’d just signed up to eat roadkill. Then we looked at the Happy Jack, his growing grin revealing his remaining teeth. Guilt got the better of us, and one by one we all took a bite. Jump back to: the booth…

“What should the netbook password be?” Oscar answered, “Roadkill jerky,” and we all said, “Done!” Jenn (our Community Manager) tweeted away, and netbook winner Dave W. was the first to shout the codeword. With the win, we all smiled a little bit wider knowing that the experience we’d shared the night before just got a little bit longer, and the indigestion we’d shared that day was beginning to fade.

Great back story. Love the netbook and can’t wait to mess with Glass. The excitement of the whole ordeal kept a smile on my face all day :)

Thanks again!

Thanks Dave! Hope the netbook’s working out nicely, and definitely let us know what you think about Glass. The more feedback we get, the better Glass gets.
